Becoming competitive no easy task.

State can do it, why couldn't Oregon?

So goes the thinking on the success of the Beavers in baseball, and a possible return of the sport for the Ducks.

Keep in mind, though, that while OSU (Open Source UNIX) Refers to the Unix variants that are maintained as open source, which were primarily BSD Unix and Linux until Sun made its Solaris operating system open source in 2005.  is in the College World Series for a third consecutive season, and as defending national champion, the Beavers didn't get there for the first time until the 11th season with Pat Casey Pat Casey (b. 1959 in McMinnville, Oregon) is the head coach for the Oregon State Beavers baseball team. He is best known for winning the 2006 College World Series for the Beavers' first-ever baseball National Championship.  as the head coach.

And Casey took over a team that had posted winning records in nine of the previous 10 seasons, so he wasn't starting from scratch, as the Ducks would be if they resurrected baseball.

`There's something to be said for only doing things that you can be competitive at,' Kilkenny said. `That would have to be part of the equation, if you were doing the analysis' of bringing baseball back to Oregon.

Mel Krause, the coach when Oregon dropped baseball in 1981, has stayed close to the sport in the state. He said recruiting against a national-caliber program like the Beavers would be the immediate challenge, but not an insurmountable one.

`Kids want to play, and they're not afraid of competition,' Krause explained. `A new coaching staff would get so many phone calls and e-mails. ... Their first issue would be sorting all that out.'

Krause said the Ducks would need not only to make a good hire for a head coach but make sure the staff was strong enough, so that one of the assistants could be a full-time recruiter in the spring, particularly in the formative formative /for·ma·tive/ (for´mah-tiv) concerned in the origination and development of an organism, part, or tissue.  years of the program.

`It's a tough league,' Krause said of Pac-10 baseball. `They would really have to work at it.'
