Bechtel National Selects Jacobus and PlantSpace for Hanford Project.PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 1998-- Engineering Software to be Employed by the Largest Environmental Engineering Firm to Immobilize im·mo·bi·lize v. 1. To render immobile. 2. To fix the position of a joint or fractured limb, as with a splint or cast. im·mo Radioactive Waste radioactive waste, material containing the unusable radioactive byproducts of the scientific, military, and industrial applications of nuclear energy. Since its radioactivity presents a serious health hazard (see radiation sickness), disposing of such material is a Jacobus, a Bentley Strategic Affiliate, Thursday announced that Bechtel National Inc. (BNI BNI Business Network International BNI Business Networking International BNI Bank Negara Indonesia BNI Bechtel National, Inc. BNI British Nursing Index BNI Barrow Neurological Institute (Phoenix, AZ) ) and BNFL BNFL British Nuclear Fuels LTD Inc. have selected PlantSpace(R) Design Series for detailed engineering of a tank waste remediation system (TWRS TWRS Tank Waste Remediation System TWRS True Wave Reduced Slope ) for liquid radioactive wastes at the Department of Energy's Hanford Site The Hanford Site is a facility of the government of the United States established to provide plutonium necessary for the development of nuclear weapons. It was established in 1943 as the Hanford Engineer Works, part of the Manhattan Project, and codenamed "Site W. in eastern Washington
BNI's services are provided to BNFL Inc., which was awarded the $6.9 billion contract in August to safely immobilize the waste. "BNI has proven expertise in completing complex engineering challenges of this size and scope," says Chris Wilding, project automation manager for BNI. "We're very confident that the use of sophisticated engineering software -- PlantSpace -- will enhance our ability to deliver a quality engineering project." Over the project's initial 24-month extended design phase, the integrated project team will develop a preliminary design for the TWRS; construction will begin in 2000 with hot operations slated to begin 2005. The initial software acquisition for the project comprises 70 MicroStation(R)-based engineering licenses with a mix of PlantSpace Design Series and PlantSpace P&ID. Engineering seats are expected to grow to over 300 in number in the detail engineering phase. The multi-year Hanford project is among the largest of its kind in the U.S. "PlantSpace will enable the delivery of a sophisticated plant data model, integrated with BNI and BNFL Inc. enterprise databases," says Chris Burrows, BNFL Inc. project manager. "This will help ensure smooth plant construction, startup and operations." During the Cold War period, the U.S. government used the 560-acre Hanford site to produce plutonium and other nuclear materials for top-secret defense purposes. The project encompasses immobilization Immobilization Definition Immobilization refers to the process of holding a joint or bone in place with a splint, cast, or brace.
