Byline: The Register-Guard

Alexander "Sasa" Cuic, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound freshman from Rijeka, Croatia, has joined the Oregon State men's basketball team.

The 20-year-old averaged 14 points and 6.4 rebounds in 35 games for Rotterdam of the Eredivisie League during the 2003-04 season and was selected to the all-Holland team. He has past experience as a member of the Croatian under-17 national team and has also played a season in Italy.

"Sasa is a highly skilled player with very good basketball intelligence," OSU (Open Source UNIX) Refers to the Unix variants that are maintained as open source, which were primarily BSD Unix and Linux until Sun made its Solaris operating system open source in 2005.  coach Jay John said. "Part of this program's offensive philosophy is be `hard to guard,' and he certainly fits in that category. He will put pressure on the opposing defenses with his size and his ability to score from various spots on the court."

A scholarship became available for Cuic when senior forward Jim Hanchett joined the football team as a tight end. Hanchett now has a football scholarship and is considered a walk-on in basketball.

In other OSU news, sophomore guard Angelo Tsagarakis is expected to be sidelined until early December following shoulder surgery last week. Tsagarakis dislocated dis·lo·cate

Budke advances

to championship match

BEND - Eugene's Mary Budke advanced to the championship of the Oregon Senior Amateur Championship with a 1-up victory over Sue Keeney on Thursday.

Budke will meet Marcia Fisher of Canby in today's championship match.

A regional team that includes a handful Eugene residents will begin the USA League Tennis 5.0 Adult National Championships today in Palm Springs, Calif. The tournament runs through Sunday.

The Eugene residents on the Pacific Northwest team are Todd Hammans, Len Spencer and Toby Krauel.
