 me the way people react when some celebrity dies. I have listened to friends who needed to tell me of being saddened for days and days when a movie star, rock legend, or stock car driver died.

But When I read that Sylvia Lawry, founder of the Society, had died, I cried.

I have lived with multiple sclerosis multiple sclerosis (MS), chronic, slowly progressive autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks the protective myelin sheaths that surround the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord (a process called demyelination), resulting in damaged areas  for 26 years. Sylvia's legacy has touched my life. I am using one of the 3 drugs that slows down my MS progression.

In 1996, I met Sylvia Lawry at the International Leadership Conference of MS Societies in Atlanta. I had to meet her, to see what this fireball fireball, very bright meteor leaving a trail in the sky that can remain visible for several minutes; often a distinct sound, perhaps caused by very low frequency radio waves, is associated with it.  of a lady was like. She was tall and thin--a very unassuming lady. For some strange reason I became teary-eyed and tongue-tied. I remember saying to her, "What are your hopes and dreams?" She turned to me and said, "Why, to cure MS, of course."
