McCartney, Sir James Paul McCartney
 was named the "Ultimate Legend" at a prestigious awards ceremony in his home city.

The former Beatle was given the one-off honour at the star-studded MTV Europe Music Awards The MTV Europe Music Awards were established in 1994 by MTV Europe to celebrate the most popular music videos in Europe. Originally beginning as an alternative to the American MTV Video Music Awards, the MTV Europe Music Awards is today a popular celebration of what MTV viewers  (EMAs) ceremony in Liverpool last night.

Eighties pop star Rick Astley was another winner, picking up the viewer's vote in the Best Act Ever category.

The show, hosted by Katy Perry, saw barnstorming performances from Pink, Beyonce, Kanye West and Estelle. Take That mesmerised the audience with an exclusive first - an atmospheric performance of their new single Greatest Day.

Britney Spears picked up the Album Of The Year award for Blackout and also won the Act of 2008 title.

Another double winner was LA rock band 30 Seconds to Mars who won the Rock Out category and the Video Star award.

Kanye West, winner of the Ultimate Urban award, gave a performance of Love Lockdown before being joined on stage by British hip hop British Hip Hop is a genre of music, and a culture that covers a variety of styles of rap music made in the United Kingdom.[1] It is sometimes known as Brithop,[2] and is generally classified as one of a number of styles of urban music.  singer Estelle for their hit American Boy.

Collecting his award, Sir Paul said: "Thanks to all my family, to all you for coming along, to everyone in Great Britain Great Britain, officially United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 60,441,000), 94,226 sq mi (244,044 sq km), on the British Isles, off W Europe. The country is often referred to simply as Britain. , to everyone in America for voting in Mr Obama."

Astley, who did not attend the event, said in a statement: "I would like to thank everyone who voted for me."
