 M. Tilman, Bear Stearns' chief institutional strategist, will present at the Endowment Management Forum, the premier event of the National Association of College and University Business Officers being held in New York on Jan. 25.

Mr. Tilman will discuss the need for asset liability management for endowments looking to increase returns while controlling risk. He will address the concept in the context of global macroeconomic mac·ro·ec·o·nom·ics

and market trends as well as lessons learned from other industries.

"Similar to traditional investment approaches utilized by the U.S. pension industry, management of endowment portfolios usually focuses on issues related to portfolio theory," Mr. Tilman said. "Topics that garner the most attention are diversification, hedge fund hedge fund, in finance, a highly speculative, largely unregulated investment device. Originating in the 1950s, the funds "hedge" by offsetting "short" positions (borrowing a security and then selling it at a higher price before repaying the lender) against "long"  transparency, active vs. passive management and alternative asset allocation. I would like the industry to consider whether an asset/liability management approach would benefit their long-term investment results in this low-return environment."

Mr. Tilman will give his speech live via videoconferencing from the World Economic Forum in Davos. He was given the distinction of being named one of the forum's Young Global Leaders This is a list of members of the Forum of Young Global Leaders 2006, 2004, by their year of induction. Each member is asked to join the forum for a five year period.
