Byline: The Register-Guard

Northwest Christian University hit all but two of its 18 free throws in the second half to preserve a 76-71 men's basketball victory over Simpson on Saturday at Morse Event Center.

The victory was the seventh in a row for the Beacons (7-2), who got 16 points from Ben Voogd, 14 from reserve Kellen Spicer and 11 from Erik Quick-Warner.

First-half defense helps NCU to win

Lori Renner had a game-high 16 points and Katie Collins added 15 to lead Northwest Christian University to a 63-55 victory over Simpson in a women's basketball game Saturday at Morse Event Center.

The Beacons (5-2) held Simpson to 28 percent shooting in the first half while building a 33-20 lead at halftime.

CORVALLIS - Jessica Gysin and Audrey Eichler had 13 kills each to lead 15th-ranked USC to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-17 victory over Oregon State in Pac-10 volleyball.

Jill Sawatzky and Rachel Rourke had 10 kills each, and Camilla Ah-Hoy had 26 assists in the final home match for OSU (12-16 overall, 3-13 Pac-10).

NCU runners make national appearance

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Samuel Robison finished 89th for Northwest Christian University on Saturday at the NAIA NAIA

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes
 National Cross Country Championships.

Robison finished the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 28 seconds. Oklahoma Christian's Silas Kisorio won in 24:23.

In the 5,000-women's race, NCU's Stephanie Hescock was 147th in 20:13. Justyne Mudy of Shorter won in 17:30.

Holder's hat trick lifts Generals to win

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Neal Holder's hat trick led Eugene to a 5-3 Nor-Pac Hockey League victory over Tri-City on Saturday.

Mat Topolewski and Christian Merritt also scored for the Generals (14-3), and Dylan Woodring had 38 saves.

Lane women rally for first-round win

SEATTLE - Lynette Minthorn scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half, and Lane Community College rallied for a 71-62 victory over Spokane in the first round of the Shoreline women's basketball tournament on Saturday.

Sarah Whitfield added 16 points for the Titans (1-0), who will face Highline in the championship game at 2 p.m. today.

Relay team places 14th for OSU women

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The 400 freestyle relay team of Lisa Chewning, Carrie Kelsey, Rachel Polack and Ashley Kerekanich finished 14th in 3 minutes, 32.09 seconds for Oregon State's best finish Saturday at the Toshiba Classic.
