Beacons in the landscape; the hillforts of England and Wales.

Brown, Ian.

Paperback

GN806

British archaeologist Brown synthesizes the research into questions about the common structure from the late Bronze Age and Iron Age, particularly what the builders had in mind and what people at the time thought of them. His intention is to introduce general readers to scholarship about an element of the modern landscape that people often encounter but know little or nothing about. He begins with definition and distribution and a review of the great surveys and excavations over the past century. Then he delves into the physical spaces such as enclosure and interiors, the role of hillforts in the economy and religion, and the social significance of their location and function. Photographs and drawings illustrate general features, but no attempt is made at a comprehensive survey of sites. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
