The Treorchy is seen as one of the greatest success stories in the cultural history of Wales. After disbanding following two world wars and a depression, it re-formed in a valley schoolroom in 1946 and has gone on to become one of the bestknown male voice combinations in the world. The group has a reputation for versatility - venturing into popular music on top of its original repertoire. WARWICKSHIRE'S Orchestra of the Swan is starting its new year by looking back at the end of a century. Wednesday sees the orchestra's first concert of 2007 and it will be a recreation of a fin de siAcle concert given for the composer Gustav Mahler in 1905. The programme includes Richard Strauss's Capriccio and Metamorphosen and songs from Mahler's Ruckert Lieder and Des Knaben Wunderhorn Des Knaben Wunderhorn (German, lit. The Youth's Magic Horn, referring to a magical device like the cornucopia) is a collection of German folk poems collected (and heavily redacted) by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, and published in Heidelberg, Germany cycles, all arranged for chamber ensemble. Conductor David Curtis says: "Since their creation, just over 100 years ago, Mahler's late orchestral songs have most often been performed with full orchestral forces. We wanted to go back to his original intentions for these intimate songs." The soloists will be Louise Poole (mezzo) and Hikan Vrasmso (baritone). TWO members of the Coull string quartet will be joining the Leamington-based Beauchamp Sinfonietta for a pair of concerts in Coventry and Warwickshire this weekend.
