What does a career as a tiler involve?

Tilers cover walls and floors with tiles, ranging from tiling a kitchen to fitting out a shop, hotel or restaurant. Some tilers also carry out specialist work, for instance on swimming pools and mosaic walls found in landscape gardening landscape gardening: see garden.

A typical job might involve marking out (known as setting out) an area to estimate the amount of tiles and adhesive needed; cutting tiles to size and shape; preparing surfaces by levelling off with plaster, sand or cement; fixing the wall or floor tiles and applying the grout Grout

What personal skills do you need?

Good practical skills, the ability to follow plans and measure accurately and attention to detail is needed.

Other talents include mathematical skills for calculating quantities of materials and costs; a creative approach and appreciation for design; the ability to work as part of a team and alone; a pleasant manner for dealing with clients; an awareness of health and safety and the ability to keep paperwork and accounts up to date if self-employed.

What training do you need?

You do not need any formal qualifications to become a tiler. Some employers may want you to have some on-site experience, which you could get by starting out as a site labourer.

You may be able to get into this job through an apprenticeship scheme with a building or tiling firm. Employers may ask for GCSEs (A-C) in subjects such as maths, English and design and technology, or equivalent qualifications like the Edexcel Introductory Certificate or Diploma in Construction.

Alternatively, you could take a college course like the Intermediate Construction Award (Tiling).

What are the opportunities for career progression?

You can train on the job, with day or block release at a local college or training centre, and can work towards an NVQ NVQ n abbr (BRIT) (= national vocational qualification) → título de formación profesional

 in Wall and Floor Tiling at levels 2 and 3. You may be able to progress to site supervisor, clerk of works or contract manager.

What is the salary?

(General guide) Starting from pounds 11,000 to pounds 16,000 a year; with qualifications, rising to pounds 17,000 and pounds 23,000; with supervisory or training duties, between pounds 25,000 and pounds 30,000.
