VPIM with Microsoft

At Tech-Ed 2000, Microsoft and Baypoint Innovations are conducting a joint demonstration highlighting VPIM interoperability between Baypoint Innovations' OnePoint Messenger for Exchange 5.5 and Microsoft's Exchange 2000. VPIM allows inter-messaging system interoperability: voice mail users, unified messaging users and e-mail users can freely exchange voice and fax messages using standard e-mail protocols -- SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) The standard e-mail protocol on the Internet and part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, as defined by IETF RFC 2821. SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and forwards the mail.  with MIME encoding. VPIM also allows OnePoint users to compose one voice mail message and send it to e-mail and voice mail users. This eliminates the need for senders to send separate messages -- one via text to e-mail centric people, another via voice to voice mail centric people.
