Bayer Corporation to be Honored by the Akron Public School District for Helping to Make Science Make Sense.

The award, now in its seventh year, is given annually to individuals and organizations that "go above and beyond" in making significant contributions to the Akron Public Schools and its students. It will be presented to Ray Newhouse, Vice President of Product Management, of Bayer, at a special awards ceremony held at a local high school on Thursday, March 18.

"As a science-based company, we have a stake in ensuring that all students are scientifically literate," said Mr. Newhouse. "We also believe that improving education is everyone's responsibility -- parents, educators, businesses and community leaders."

The Akron site is one of 22 Bayer sites across the country actively involved in Making Science Make Sense programs in their local communities. The site, established in 1964, is responsible for marketing, sales and technical service for Bayer's North American North American

Bayer launched its public-private partnership Public-private partnership (PPP) describes a government service or private business venture which is funded and operated through a partnership of government and one or more private sector companies. These schemes are sometimes referred to as PPP or P3.  with the Akron Public Schools in May 1998 when Dr. Mae C. Jemison, former astronaut astronaut, crew member on a U.S. manned spaceflight mission; the Soviet term is cosmonaut. Candidates for manned spaceflight are carefully screened to meet the highest physical and mental standards, and they undergo rigorous training.  and current science literacy advocate for Making Science Make Sense, visited with students to share hands-on science experiments and announce the new partnership.

Through the partnership, Bayer volunteers regularly visit fifth grade classrooms in both schools, helping teachers to teach and students to learn science the way scientists do -- through analyzing, experimenting, problem-solving and working in teams. The volunteers also serve as science fair judges and mentors. In addition, Bayer donates equipment and supplies for teachers involved in hands-on, inquiry-based education and has sponsored "Science Nights" in local schools.
