Bayer Awards Getronics $23 million Three-year IT services contract.

Getronics, a global IT services and solutions company with North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  headquarters in Billerica, today announced that Bayer Corporation has selected Getronics as the sole services and support provider for PCs and laptops in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  and Canada. The three-year, $23 million contract covers all of Bayer's business units and 18,500 employees.

Getronics is providing desktop hardware and software support. Systems include Dell and IBM PCs A PC made by IBM. IBM created the PC industry in 1981 when it introduced its first model with 16KB of RAM. However, it was way off in its estimates, projecting that 250,000 units would be sold in the first five years. In fact, about three million IBM PCs were sold in that period.  and laptops running Microsoft suites, Lotus Notes Messaging and groupware software from IBM Lotus that was introduced in 1989 for OS/2 and later expanded to Windows, Mac, Unix, NetWare, AS/400 and S/390. Notes provides e-mail, document sharing, workflow, group discussions and calendaring and scheduling. , virus and firewall software, and custom applications. The contract also covers asset management, remote diagnostics Vehicle Diagnostics
Vehicle diagnostics enables a mechanic to diagnose the exact mechanical condition of the vehicle and its systems and components. Remote Diagnostics enables to perform such diagnosis without requiring the vehicle to physically be present for checkup.
, as well as installations, moves, adds and changes. These services are all part of Getronics' NetWorkPlace(TM) suite of infrastructure solutions.

Getronics' selected over 10 competitors

Getronics won the contract based on its service to Bayer businesses in the United States and Canada prior to this latest agreement. Getronics' proposal also addressed Bayer's ongoing efforts to reduce IT costs.

In 2001 Bayer began an IT initiative to improve cost effectiveness and service quality. As part of the initiative, Getronics has been selected to be the only provider of services for desktop and laptop users at 200 locations across HealthCare, Crop Science, Polymers, and Chemicals business units.

Customer satisfaction key consideration

Getronics won the contract, in part, based on its track record of providing support to a few Bayer operations in the United States and Canada. Getronics has clearly defined its approach to providing system services and adheres to agreed to service level agreements (SLAs).
