Bayer AG, Leverkusen Leverkusen (lā'fərk`zən), city (1994 pop. 161,760), North Rhine–Westphalia, W Germany, on the Rhine River. It is an industrial center and a road and rail junction. Manufactures include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, photographic film, machinery, and textiles., Germany, plans to sell three businesses and will give its four core divisions more freedom to seek alliances under a restructuring plan aimed at improving profits. The planned sale of three businesses is designed to leave Bayer with "independent" drug, chemical, polymer and crop protection units under a new holding company in 2003.

Chief Executive Manfred Manfred (măn`frəd, Ger. män`frāt), c.1232–1266, king of Sicily (1258–66), the last Hohenstaufen on that throne. An illegitimate son of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, Manfred was regent in Sicily for his brother Conrad IV. Schneider said Bayer's new structure is intended to "increase maneuverability in our markets, to improve our competitiveness, to better exploit synergies and to align our business for potential strategic partnerships."
