Bay walk raises cash for charity.Byline: Peter Bibby Community Af fairs Editor A UNIQUE walk across the waters of Cardiff Bay Cardiff Bay (Welsh: Bae Caerdydd) is the regeneration area created by the Cardiff Barrage which impounded two rivers (Taff and Ely) to form a new 500 acre freshwater lake around the former dockland area south of the city centre of Cardiff in south Wales. raised thousands of pounds for a whole host of charities and good causes. More than 1,200 people took part in the very first Lord Mayor's Walk The Bay this summer. The event - staged as part of the official opening celebrations of the pounds 220m Cardiff Bay Barrage The Cardiff Bay Barrage lies across the mouth of Cardiff Bay, Wales between Queen Alexandra Dock and Penarth Head. It was one of the largest civil engineering projects in Europe during construction in the 1990s. - was supported by people of all ages from communities right across South Wales South Wales south n → sud m du Pays de Galles . A total of 1,241 set off on the threemile walk in June from the Penarth end of the barrage, across the milelong dam, through part of the old Cardiff docklands and into the new Cardiff Bay waterfront. They were representing 75 charities and good causes, ranging from Brownies groups to national charities and a clinic project in Uganda. And they raised a magnificent total of pounds 18,578.55. Supported by Cardiff's Lord Mayor Russell Goodway, who flagged off the walkers, the Noah's Ark Appeal The Noah's Ark Appeal, also known as the Children's Hospital for Wales Appeal, was founded in May 2000 to build the first ever Children's Hospital solely for use by the children of Wales. The founding trustees of the Appeal were Wyn Calvin, Eddie Rabiotti and Lyn Jones. raised pounds 1,600 through the event. But scores of good causes like the St Saviours Church Restoration Appeal in Splott and the Velindre Hospital Cancer Unit also boosted their own fundraising projects. Coun Goodway was presented with a framed certificate of thanks to mark the inaugural Walk The Bay by event organiser Jean Summerhayes, of Barnardo's. And he said: "I am absolutely delighted with the success of the first Walk The Bay in which so many people took part to the benefit of so many good causes."
