Bay to Border Tour on Interstate 80.More Than $1 Billion in Improvements Highlighted on Heavily Traveled Freeway SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Today the California Department of Transportation The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is a government agency in the U.S. state of California. Its mission is to improve mobility across the state. It manages the state highway system and is actively involved with public transportation systems in California. (Caltrans) Director Will Kempton took a road trip on Interstate 80 to highlight projects in construction or planned in the next four years that will improve the heavily traveled roadway from the Bay Area to the Nevada state line. More than $1 billion is being invested in corridor mobility, safety improvements, traveler information, and pavement rehabilitation in the nearly 170 miles of Interstate 80. "These projects are designed to improve mobility on this vital artery," said Kempton. "Not only will these projects collectively provide a safe and dependable route for the traveling public, but will help move goods from our state to the rest of the nation." The caravan began at the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza in Oakland and moved east, highlighting the projects along the route. Some of the projects planned or underway include: Interstate 80 Corridor Mobility Project - The $47.1 million project will upgrade existing corridor management elements along Interstate 80 from the Carquinez Bridge The Carquinez Bridge refers to two parallel bridges which cross the Carquinez Strait linking Vallejo, California to the north, with Crockett, California to the south. The bridges are signed as part of Interstate 80. Toll is only charged to eastbound traffic. to the San Francisco Bay San Francisco Bay, 50 mi (80 km) long and from 3 to 13 mi (4.8–21 km) wide, W Calif.; entered through the Golden Gate, a strait between two peninsulas. Bridge Toll Plaza. This system will be integrated with the Alameda County Smart Corridors Program and the Caltrans Transportation Management Center to provide real-time information to help Caltrans monitor and control traffic. Pavement Rehabilitation between Vallejo and Vacaville - Caltrans began construction this past January to rehabilitate badly worn pavement for 27 miles and add or upgrade median barriers in segments. The projects, totaling $125 million, are scheduled to be completed by fall 2009. HOV Lanes in Solano County - The first Proposition 1B project to begin in the Bay Area, this new 8.7 mile carpool car·pool n. also car pool 1. Bus/HOV Lanes in Sacramento County - Bus and high-occupancy vehicle lanes are being constructed in both directions from the Sacramento County line to Miners Ravine and then to the State Route 65 connector. These projects, partially funded by Proposition 1B, are scheduled for completion in 2011. Sierra Rehabilitation Projects - Projects will improve roadways in the Sierras where heavy snowfall and increased traffic are common.
