Bay Networks Takes Control of IP Address Management; Automation Eases Administrative Hassle With Internet Onslaught.

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 15, 1998--Bay Networks, Inc. (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:BAY) announced today the release of NetID 4.0, bringing further order to the complex Internet environment.

The newest release of the industry leading IP address management software offers new functionality that brings a higher level of reliability to IP networks and enhances the product's scalable, secure, dynamic architecture. In addition to easing the burden of managing Internet addresses, NetID will serve as the foundation of Bay Networks' policy-enabled networking architecture by extending the platform to include not only IP addresses, but also network policies.

The NetID product is a multi-administrator platform for IP address, DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the  and DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Software that automatically assigns temporary IP addresses to client stations logging into an IP network. It eliminates having to manually assign permanent "static" IP addresses. DHCP software runs in servers and routers.  management in IP networks, that reduces the complexity of assigning and maintaining Internet addresses. "Just as business continues to explode on the Internet, managing IP networks has become increasingly complicated. The new functionality in NetID 4.0 extends the product's open architecture and continues to introduce innovations in DNS and DHCP technology that will meet our customers expectations for increased reliability in IP networks," said Mark Gaudet Mark Gaudet (far left in the image) is a Canadian musician from Moncton, New Brunswick. He has played in various grunge and metal music groups, such as Elevator, Eric's Trip, Purple Knight and Funeral Fog. In Funeral Fog, he uses the stage name Shithammer. , manager of the NetID Group at Bay Networks.

The availability of a core API, a completely Web-based interface and enhanced DNS and DHCP functionality further eases IP address, DNS and DHCP management. NetID 4.0 will also support Active Server Management, displaying the status of all NetID DNS and DHCP Servers from the product's administrative interface and brining a new level of fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

A New Look and Feel for NetID

A re-designed, Web-based interface as well as the availability of an API brings some major changes to NetID. Complete administrative functionality is now available from a Java interface, extending platform support for the NetID Management Console A terminal or workstation used to monitor and control a network. See Microsoft Management Console.  to any Java 1.1-compatible Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. . The interface has also been re-designed with a new hierarchical tree format format and allows for the viewing of custom fields, history for networks, subnets, hosts, ranges and domains, and DNS and DHCP Server alarms and warnings.

Customers can also leverage the API to develop custom functionality on top of NetID or to integrate the product with their billing and provisioning systems. The fully supported library of C++ function will be documented and sold as a separate product.

DNS and DHCP Enhancements

In addition to extensibility, NetID 4.0 brings a higher level to IP through Active Server Management and DNS and DHCP enhancements.

Active Server Management allows administrators to view the real-time status of all NetID DNS and DHCP Servers across their network from the product's Management Console. The Servers generate alarms and warnings are written to the NetID database. Alarms also generate Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. ) traps that can be viewed from a network management platform.

DNS and DHCP enhancements have been added to further simplify the management of these services. The enhancements include extended support for dynamic addressing, DHCP migration support and standards-based DDNS (Dynamic DNS) A service that lets anyone on the Internet gain access to resources on a local network when the Internet address of that network is constantly changing. Such resources are typically a Web server, Webcam or a PC for remote control operation. .

DHCP Client Pools allow for the secure allocation of DHCP addresses by associating pools of client IDs or MAC addresses with a DHCP ranges -- a NetID DHCP Server will then only assign addresses to clients with a know MAC address or client ID. New DHCP migration functionality facilitates an organization's transition to DHCP, giving users the flexibility to create dynamic ranges that overlap static addresses and to convert dynamic DHCP clients to static DHCP. As well, NetID 4.0's support of BIND 8.1.1 enables standards-based dynamic DNS updates. When a NetID DHCP Server issues an address to a client, it updates the NetID database and name servers in parallel.

Pricing and Availability

NetID is scheduled to ship on all platforms (Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs.
