SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 1, 1998--

-- Version 5.0 Now Supports Automatic SPID (Service Profile IDentifier) A number assigned to an ISDN line by the telephone company that indicates which services the ISDN device can access. The SPID is used by the central office switch, and depending on the type of switch, either one or two SPIDs or none at all  and Switch Type Detection Through NauticaWizard(tm), an Intuitive Set-up and Configuration Application--

Bay Networks (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:BAY) today released Software Version 5.0 for the Nautica(tm) 200 ISDN router - a fully featured networking solution that connects small enterprises, remote offices, retail stores, and home users to the corporate office or to the Internet. The high-performance Nautica 200 ISDN router offers a rich feature set, including digital and analog integration, simple configuration and management via the NauticaWizard set-up and configuration tool and the NauticaWatch(tm) real-time status and performance monitoring program for Windows 95, as well as multi-vendor interoperability, compression and dial services, at the industry-low list price of $595 (U.S.).

Nautica 200 Version 5.0 Enhancements:

- Automatic SPID and ISDN ISDN

Digital telecommunications network that operates over standard copper telephone wires or other media.
switch type detection for true plug and play installation.

- 64Kbps and 128Kbps leased line ISDN operation. Will also support a mixed leased line and switched mode operation over a single ISDN BRI.

- Support for TON/Intl/Natl CLI (1) (Call Level Interface) A database programming interface from the SQL Access Group (SAG), an SQL membership organization. SAG's CLI is an attempt to standardize the SQL language for database access.  Called No (Number Plans) enables the Nautica 200 to deal correctly with the presentation of any number plan in any area of the world for local, national, and international calls.

- Enhanced NauticaWizard set-up and configuration tool provides a more intuitive and logical approach to installation.

- Cost control features added include automated ISDN usage alerts that alleviate the possibility of an unexpectedly large ISDN bill.

"The Nautica 200 ISDN router delivers a low cost, yet fully-featured personal router for telecommuters, small offices and Internet access, without requiring any knowledge of IP Networking," said Gordon Young, product manager for the Nautica 200. "The enhancements in Version 5.0 will enable our customers to benefit from the router functionality found in a large office but at a small office price."

The ISDN-based Nautica 200 ISDN router enables SOHO Soho (sōhō`, sə–), district of Westminster, London, England, known for its continental restaurants. Once a fashionable quarter, it became popular among writers and artists in the 19th cent.  businesses and telecommuters to access Internet or corporate Intranet resources more easily and cost-effectively than other competitive SOHO router solutions. The Nautica 200 router is an ideal solution for remote site users who choose ISDN connectivity as a cost-effective alternative to a permanent connection into a corporate network or Internet service. By supporting Ethernet, ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI See ISDN.

BRI - Basic Rate Interface
) and dual analog ports, the Nautica 200 router maximizes remote connectivity while minimizing infrastructure costs.

The Nautica 200 ISDN router features one 10BASE-T Ethernet interface, one ISDN BRI interface, and two analog Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) ports for simultaneous support of such devices as a phone, fax or modem. By supporting two POTS devices, the Nautica 200 router enables users to consolidate all office devices over a single ISDN BRI line, saving the costs associated with a separate telephone/fax line. Alternatively, the Nautica 200 router can combine both ISDN BRI B-channels into a single logical 128 Kbps connection to handle peak traffic periods.

In addition, the Nautica 200 ISDN router includes the Bay Networks Nautica Routing Services (NauticaRS(tm)) software which supports TCP/IP TCP/IP

The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  protocol of choice for online access, and ISDN, the most popular WAN option for high-speed intermittent connections. Bay Networks NauticaRS enables the Nautica 200 router to maximize investment protection in multivendor environments by supporting standards-based protocols and services. The Nautica 200 router interoperates with all Bay Networks BayRS(tm), Remote Annex(tm), Contivity(tm) and Versalar(tm) products and is fully interoperable with equipment from other vendors such as 3Com, Ascend, Cisco, and Shiva using PPP/MP/BACP/CCP standards.

NauticaRS supports Network Address Translation (NAT (Network Address Translation) An IETF standard that allows an organization to present itself to the Internet with far fewer IP addresses than there are nodes on its internal network. ) and Port Address Translation (networking) Port Address Translation - (PAT) A function provided by some routers which allows hosts on a LAN to communicate with the rest of a network (such as the Internet) without revealing their own private IP address.  (PAT) along with dynamic IP addressing using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Software that automatically assigns temporary IP addresses to client stations logging into an IP network. It eliminates having to manually assign permanent "static" IP addresses. DHCP software runs in servers and routers.  or IPCP IPCP - Internet Protocol Control Protocol  protocols. These features combine to allow a small network of users to share a single user dial-up Internet account. The Nautica 200 router will mask the IP addresses of the LAN users, allowing all users to communicate on the Internet using a single dynamically assigned IP address.

NauticaRS also offers increased flexibility with support for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol See PPTP.

NauticaRS compression enables the Nautica 200 router to increase the amount of data that can be carried across an ISDN line. Remote connectivity and availability are ensured via NauticaRS Dial Services support, which includes Dial-on-Demand and Bandwidth-on-Demand for the Nautica 200 router. Dial-on-Demand provides digital connections on an as-needed basis, allowing on-demand access to remote resources in keeping with the traffic needs of telecommuters and small offices. The Nautica 200 router provides Bandwidth-on-Demand via Multilink PPP to deliver additional bandwidth across an ISDN link during peak usage periods.

Easy Set-Up, Configuration and Management

The Bay Networks Nautica 200 router provides many features that simplify configuration and enable SNMP-based network management capabilities. Designed for easy set-up and configuration, the Nautica 200 router features the Nautica Configuration Wizard -- a two-tiered, intuitive Windows 95-based graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

, PC-literate users are operational with a few keystrokes and do not need any expertise in traditional IP Networking.

The Nautica 200 router also offers powerful monitoring facilities with NauticaWatch -- a Windows-based application that allows users/IT managers to easily monitor the operation of their Nautica 200 routers from their Windows 95/NT desktops. Bay Networks NauticaWatch application provides real-time indications of status and activity, through a simple, easy-to-understand, pop-up window.

In addition, SNMP-based management systems, including HP OpenView, Tivoli NetView for AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families.  and Sun Microsystems' Solstice Domain Manager, can manage the Nautica 200 router. The product also can be configured and managed from any local or remote ANSI-standard terminal or from a PC on the network using Telnet. For experienced users and/or existing Bay Networks installations, the Nautica 200 router supports the Bay Command Console (BCC), Bay Networks' management interface for local asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  terminal and remote Telnet access. This solution is ideal for network environments where the installation, management and maintenance of the remote routers are performed from a central site.
