Bay Area McDonald's Set to Participate in Second Annual World Children's Day; Local Fundraiser for Children to Be Held November 20-23.

In its second year, World Children's Day will raise funds and awareness for children's organizations, locally and around the world, through a variety of activities and promotions developed by each restaurant. Ronald McDonald will kick off the four-day fundraiser in the Bay Area with a whirlwind multi-city tour, featuring visits to radio stations and the San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  Ronald McDonald House, as well as unannounced visits to entertain children at many McDonald's restaurants There are more than 30,000 McDonald's restaurants in 119 countries. The first McDonald's was not a restaurant at all, but it was a sit-in stand. The company's early franchises were built to a standard pattern that did not offer seating; this was in part to prevent

"It's wonderful that RMHC will be the recipient of this worldwide effort to help kids. Just imagine the difference we can make when McDonald's restaurants around the world team up for this effort! I, for one, plan to visit as many McDonald's restaurants as I can to do my part," says Ronald McDonald.

Bay Area Olympians and World Children's Day spokespersons Dan Veatch Daniel Veatch swam for the United States team at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, finishing seventh in the 200-meter backstroke, his specialist event. He won the 200m backstroke at the Pan Pacific Games in Brisbane in 1987 and again in Tokyo in 1989.  (Swimming '88) and Mark Henderson (Swimming '96) will also help spread the word with Ronald.

Last year Northern California McDonald's restaurants raised more than $40,000 for the local chapter of the Ronald McDonald House Charities, in what was then a one-day fundraiser. Due to its success, World Children's Day has been expanded to a four-day fundraiser this year.

"These four days, every visit to every McDonald's in the Bay Area helps us continue our mission of directly improving the health and well-being of children around the world."

The first-ever World Children's Day fundraiser held last year raised more than $12 million in 24 hours. These funds were used in to help children in need through programs such as:

in the U.S.

-- Aid for orphanages throughout eastern Europe

-- Assistance for some 70 children's hospitals worldwide

As a primary beneficiary, RMHC will be able to continue to support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children through its network of 171 local Chapters currently serving in 44 countries. RMHC has awarded more than $340 million in grants to aid critical children's causes in such areas as immunization immunization: see immunity; vaccination. , education, life-changing surgeries, child abuse prevention and aid for the mentally and physically challenged. RMHC also supports Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles and other community efforts for children.
