For every Giving Meal sold, local McDonald's restaurant owner/operators will donate 10 percent of the purchase price to RMHCBA; the traditional Happy Meal "toy" of The Giving Meal is this charitable donation.

"We've created a meal that appeals to our customers' tastes, both in food and philanthropy -- we are giving back to the community that has made us successful," said Scott Rodrick, Board President of RMHCBA and San Francisco McDonald's owner/operator. Local McDonald's owner/operators teamed with RMHCBA members and tapped its San Francisco advertising agency Hoffman/Lewis to create this concept -- from the meal itself to the package and suggested donation. To discover what might appeal to Bay Area consumers, McDonald's turned to local women and families for input and subsequently developed The Giving Meal as a moderately-sized meal for adults: either a Double Cheeseburger or McChicken(R) sandwich, choice of Side Salad or a Small Fries, and a small drink -- packaged in a pastel-hued, family-themed box for easy take-out Take-out

He added that The Giving Meal will be supported by a full advertising and marketing campaign, including TV, radio and transit advertising, plus point of purchase displays.

"This is a new way to support our local charities, programs that make a real difference in kids' lives," said Brad Goldblatt, President of the McDonald's Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. "If The Giving Meal sells to our expectations, it could raise as much as $90,000 per month for RMHCBA. To our knowledge, we're the only restaurants doing anything like this," he continued. If the concept catches on, Goldblatt expects to see other McDonald's regions adopt The Giving Meal to support their own Ronald McDonald House Charities programs.
