and amputations if untreated. Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that "unlocks" the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter and fuel them. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death by disease; this year alone, diabetes will kill more than 200,000 people nationwide.

Nearly 17 million Americans, 1.25 million in California, have diabetes and 16 million more have pre-diabetes. More than one-third of those with diabetes are undiagnosed. Diabetes strikes one in 20 people in the general population, and African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and Native Americans are twice as likely to be affected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center.  calls diabetes an "epidemic." The prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. population has increased by 50 percent since 1990. At the current rate of growth, more than 10 percent of Americans will have diabetes in ten years.

The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading voluntary health organization concerned with diabetes and its complications. Founded in 1940, the Association provides services in communities nationwide. The mission of the American Diabetes Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
