Bay Area Council Announces New Chairman.


SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1999--

The Bay Area Council today announced the appointment of Jay T. Harris as the organization's new Chairman of the Board.

Harris is the Chairman and Publisher of the San Jose Mercury News The San Jose Mercury News is the major daily newspaper in San Jose, California and Silicon Valley. The paper is owned by MediaNews Group. Its headquarters and printing plant are located in North San Jose next to the Nimitz Freeway (Interstate 880). , which is owned by Knight-Ridder. Harris succeeds Gary Rogers, who is stepping down from the Bay Area Council chairmanship on October 25, when the Bay Area Council hosts its Annual Dinner.

T. Gary Rogers T. Gary Rogers is the CEO of Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream. He was the owner of Dreyer's until the company was taken over by Nestlé in 2006.

Rodgers purchased Dreyer's with his business partner, Rick Cronk in 1977.

During his 30 years work in journalism and newspapers Harris has worked as a reporter and editor, as an educator, and as a corporate executive. As publisher of the Mercury News since February 1994, Harris has maintained the paper's continuing commitment to journalism in the public interest. During his tenure the paper has emphasized more complete coverage of community life, increased the quality and quantity of news about Silicon Valley business and high technology, and launched weekly Spanish- and Vietnamese-language newspapers and online sites.

His professional work has been recognized with awards from numerous universities, non-profit and social justice organizations, and national journalism and journalism education organizations. He has received honorary doctorates from Lincoln University Lincoln University.
