Baum Hedlund Announces Trial Began Thursday, June 8, 2006, over Deaths of Three LAFD Employees Arising from the Los Angeles Fire Department Bell 205A-1 Helicopter Fatal Air Crash in Griffith Park During an Airlift Rescue in 1998.


Opening Arguments Expected to Begin Monday, June 12, 2006
WHAT: Jury selection began on Thursday, June 8, 2006 at 8:30 A.M. in
re Butler, et al., v. Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc. in Los Angeles
Superior Court in three wrongful death claims against Bell Helicopter
Textron, Inc., Bell Technical Services, Inc. and the Estate of Robert
A. Gustafson arising from the 1998 Bell helicopter crash in Los
Angeles. The helicopter was airlifting an injured child when the tail
rotor yoke failed and caused the aircraft to crash, killing four and
injuring two. The trial for the deaths of veteran LAFD employees,
Michael Butler, Eric Reiner and Michael McComb, is before the Hon.
David Workman. Punitive damages are being sought in this case. The
widows are being represented by Ronald L. M. Goldman (lead trial
counsel), Robert E. Guilford and J. Clark Aristei of the Los Angeles-
based law firm of Baum Hedlund.

WHO: The lawsuit was filed by Maria Butler and her minor son for the
death of Michael Butler (LAFD paramedic); Lisa Reiner and her four
minor children for the death of Eric Reiner (LAFD paramedic); and
Lorene McComb and her three adult children for the death of Michael
McComb (LAFD helicopter apparatus operator).

Street, Los Angeles, CA

FACTS: On March 23, 1998, a Bell 205A-1, Registration No. N90230,
owned and operated by the Los Angeles City Fire Department, crashed
when its tail rotor failed in flight as a result of metal fatigue in
the tail rotor yoke. The crash occurred in Griffith Park, Los Angeles
and the helicopter was destroyed.
