A man told how he was forced to protect himself when violence flared outside a Tyneside night club.

 in a disturbance outside the Baja Beach in Gateshead in the early hours of February 11.

Two males fighting were monitored by a CCTV operator who called police, Gateshead Magistrates heard.

Several people intervened to try and break up the fight. One man was seen to kick out, knocking a woman to the ground.

He was detained by a police officer, while another officer was directed by the CCTV operator to Murray, who was standing near the Swing Bridge.

Police charged 33-year-old Murray while the other man, who has no previous convictions, was given a caution.

Murray, of Felstead Crescent, Sunderland, admitted causing fear or provocation of violence In English Law Fear or Provocation of Violence forms part of the Public Order Act 1986 under section 4.

The Public Order Act 1986 s.4 states:

1) A person is guilty of an offence if he -
