has many notable buildings and 20 River Terrace is the first of its kind," he said. "In about six months, it will welcome its new residents into a world of healthy living. We are right now looking at the building that proved it was possible to clean and re-generate water onsite, that clean filters could humidify air, that you can use rainwater from your roof. This is a building that will set new standards. Some people will wonder why we waited so long to embrace green design. I will tell you honestly--because it costs too much to build 'green.' But we know today that putting green in your building will put green in your pocket for years to come."

Touted as the "first environmentally responsible residential tower in U.s.," 20 River Terrace will be a 27-story apartment building on the edge of the Hudson River Hudson River

. Developed by Albanese Development Corporation, the building is slated for completion by the summer of 2003.

In recognition of both the developer's and Battery Park City Authority's efforts to improve building design, Mikhail Gorbachev, president of Green Cross International, expressed hope that the same guidelines used in the construction of 20 River Terrace will be used worldwide.

"The environment is our life," he noted. "And while many great things start with risk and only a small following, they soon grow into mass movements. This building is probably like the first TV sets--the screen is small, it's black and white, there are only a few channels, but with time, everyone will have an improved version.

In 2000, Batter Park City Authority recieved the Green Cross Inter national award for Design.
