Battalion holds farewell march.


THERE were cheers and tears yesterday as soldiers staged a farewell march before a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Chester as the soldiers of the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh Regiment The Royal Welsh Regiment was an infantry regiment of the Territorial Army in the United Kingdom. It was formed in 1999 as part of the restructuring of the TA by the amalgamation of the two Welsh TA battalions:
  • 3rd (V) Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers
, accompanied by the Mass Corps of Drums, took part in a final inspection by the city's Lord Mayor.

The 200 soldiers were dressed in desert combats and carried fully-loaded rucksacks and much of the equipment they will use in Afghanistan.

Kimberley Simpson, from Colwyn Bay Colwyn Bay (kôl`wĭn), Welsh Bae Colwyn, town (1991 pop. 27,002), Conwy, N Wales. It is a popular seaside resort. Colwyn Bay has an amusement park, several theaters, a zoo, a botanic garden, and the Pwllychrochan Woods. , whose partner Fusilier Stephen Lloyd Roberts is embarking on his third deployment to Afghanistan, said: "The march and the welcome they have received today is nice but it's sad too.

"The reality of the situation is now kicking in. They are off to war and I won't see Stephen until next May."

Former Welsh Guardsman Gerald Sullivan and his wife Sandra, from Connah's Quay Coordinates:  Connah's Quay (Welsh: Cei Conna) is the largest town in Flintshire, North Wales, lying on the River Dee, near the border with England. , watched their 18-year-old grandson Fusilier Jack Sullivan take part in the march.

Mrs Sullivan said: "We are apprehensive but he's made the choice to be in the Army and now we have to support him.

"We wish them all the best and hope they come back safe."
