Bassett gets post-Clark job.

Byline: Jacqueline Reis

WORCESTER - Clark University Clark University, at Worcester, Mass.; coeducational; chartered 1887, opened as a graduate school 1889. It was the second graduate school to be formed in the United States. Its undergraduate college (est. 1902) was integrated with the university in 1920.  President John E. Bassett will become the next president of Heritage University in Toppenish, Wash., after his retirement from Clark in July, he announced yesterday.

Heritage is a small, private institution on a Native American reservation belonging to the Yakama Nation. It is near Yakima in south central Washington Central Washington is a region of the United States defined as the western half of Eastern Washington, or those counties lying east of the Cascade Mountains but west of the 119th meridian.  state.

In a letter to the Clark community, Mr. Bassett wrote, "Some of you know that I once said whatever I did it would not be to serve as president of another college. The unique features of Heritage and its inspirational story are the things that changed my mind."

In an interview, he compared Heritage to a college version of University Park Campus School, the small, high-achieving school Clark helped create within the Worcester public schools. "These are all low-income kids totally outside the world of education," Mr. Bassett said. Many of them are children of Mexican farm workers, many are Yakama and many are Filipino. "They come out of tough backgrounds," he said.

"It just pulled at my heart," he continued. "I wouldn't be a real Clarkie if I didn't say yes."

His job at Heritage will be to come up with a good economic and fundraising plan to move the school from adolescence to adulthood, he said. He will succeed Heritage's founding president, Kathleen Ross. She is a member of the Sisters of the Holy Name of Jesus and Mary and has been president for 27 years.

The school has six locations across Washington and 1,400 students in bachelor's and master's degree master's degree
