Born in Brooklyn of Haitian and Puerto Rican parents, painter Jean-Michel Basquiat came of age in New York's East Village club scene in the late '70s and '80s. The hottest painters, pop stars and movie stars lined up at the doors of Studio 54 and DJs in the Bronx and Harlem were birthing a fetal hip hop culture Hip hop is a subculture, which is said to have begun with the work of DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, and Afrika Bambaattaa.

Art dealer Tony Shafrazi and writer/editor Sirmans published a volume of new and reprinted musings, interviews and essays by artists, friends, critics and collectors such as Keith Haring, Paule Marshall and Glenn O'Brien.
