tools: the Japanese Morphological Analyzer, the Chinese Morphological Analyzer, and the Chinese Script Converter. These Unicode-compliant tools provide software and Internet applications with the means to segment Asian text and automate Chinese script conversion.

The functions of the morphological analyzers are critical for full-text search and retrieval of Asian language text, or for any text processing operations. The Chinese Script Converter allows documents to be exchanged between readers and writers of the two Chinese scripts in use today: simplified Chinese (in the People's Republic People's Republic

Instead of reinventing the wheel Reinventing the wheel is a phrase that means a generally accepted technique or solution is ignored in favor of a locally invented solution. To "reinvent the wheel" is to duplicate a basic method that has long since been accepted and even taken for granted. , software developers can take advantage of these computational linguistics tools to quickly plug into English- or European-only applications, and empower businesses to take advantage of the market opportunities in Asia faster, more efficiently, and at lower costs than otherwise possible.

"More than ever, dealing with the flow of information in business is sometimes like drinking from a fire hydrant. The ability to search documents and retrieve information is becoming a requirement of any application processing text, from word processors to search engines to document repositories. Basis Technology's Computational Linguistics tools address this growing need for software developers entering the highly lucrative Japanese and emerging Chinese software markets," says Carl Hoffman, president of Basis Technology. "By taking the mystery out of handling Japanese and Chinese, Basis Technology helps developers keep control of their code, get a product out fast and avoid relying on overseas partnerships and third-party vendors."

Basis Technology will showcase these new tools in product demonstrations during the 15th International Unicode Conference (www.unicode.org), August 30 - September 2, 1999 in San Jose, California San Jose (IPA: /ˌsænhoʊˈzeɪ/) is the third-largest city in California, and the tenth-largest in the United States. It is the county seat of Santa Clara County. . Basis Technology is a sponsor of the conference, which addresses topics ranging from Unicode use in the World Wide Web, corporate intranets, and databases to the latest Unicode developments in Java.

Presentation at 15th International Unicode Conference

Tina Lieu, Project Manager at Basis Technology Corp., and Eric Gardner, Manager of Search Product Development at Lycos, Inc., will co-present "Destination Japan: Internationalization of the Lycos Search Engine" on September 1 at the 15th International Unicode Conference. Lieu and Gardner will present the development effort as a case study in the use of Unicode in a real production environment -- the Lycos Japanese search engine.

About the Products

The Japanese Morphological Analyzer is a portable, high-performance text analysis and word segmentation engine for Japanese. Combined with comprehensive Japanese dictionaries, this is a robust source code library that solves the problem of script analysis inherent in text that has no spaces between words. It does this by returning words that are logical for the sentence structure in which they reside.

The Chinese Morphological Analyzer is a portable, high-performance text analysis and word segmentation engine for Chinese text. Proven 98.7 percent accurate when run over random web pages, the Chinese Morphological Analyzer accurately segments Chinese text into words based on an extensive dictionary containing over 350,000 words tagged with information about parts of speech and pinyin pronunciation.

Standard Chinese Standard Chinese can refer to the following:
  • The spoken standard: Standard Mandarin
  • The written standard: Vernacular Chinese
is written in two forms -- simplified Chinese (SC) and traditional Chinese (TC). There are major differences between SC and TC on numerous levels, including character sets, encoding See encode.  methods, orthography, vocabulary, and semantics. The Chinese Script Converter accounts for these differences and automates the conversion of characters between the two modern Chinese scripts.
