The 23 chapters of the book are organized to cover each section of the 2006 edition of ICD-9-CM. A coding self-test and a booklet of exercise answers are included. Seventy pages of appendices cover topics such as commonly used drugs and ethics in coding. The layout features bullet points and numerous subheadings in an outline format, and worksheet-style exercises. Schraffenberger is an adjunct faculty member in the coding certificate program at Moraine Valley Community College.
