The most significant announcement is the continued funding for BGCA's critical afterschool education initiatives aimed at closing the "achievement gap," especially among minority youth across the country. This year's contribution brings the total amount donated by JCPenney Afterschool to $12 million over a five-year period.

"It is especially important to me that Latino youth receive opportunities to succeed. I applaud the efforts of Boys & Girls Clubs of America and JCPenney Afterschool."

Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan will join Rodriguez and director of JCPenney Afterschool Ed Solczak on the field at Comerica Park for the check presentation.

"Power Hour in Spanish helps Latino youth succeed academically, and it fosters a lifetime love of learning," said Solczak. "That is why the Spanish translation of Power Hour is a priority for our partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America."

A new study funded by JCPenney Afterschool and published by the Afterschool Alliance finds that more than 15 million children in the U.S. are in need of afterschool education. Extensive research has repeatedly shown that good afterschool education programs benefit all students by raising math and reading performance, improving attendance, decreasing involvement in crime, and reducing dropout rates.
