Baseball All Stars and Hall of Famers Team up with Safeway to Fight Prostate Cancer; Charity Softball Game takes place Saturday September 20.

PLEASANTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 2003

A lineup of some of major league baseball's most notable All Stars and Hall of Famers will take on a team of Safeway executives in the third annual Safeway Hall of Fame All Star Charity Softball Game on Saturday, September 20 at 12 noon.

The team of All Stars, organized by Nabisco, include Brooks Robinson
    Brooks Calbert Robinson, Jr. (born May 18, 1937 in Little Rock, Arkansas) is an American former third baseman in Major League Baseball. He played his entire 23-year career with the Baltimore Orioles (1955-77). Robinson was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.

    , Pete Rose
      Peter Edward "Pete" Rose, Sr. (born April 14, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio), nicknamed Charlie Hustle, is a former player and manager in Major League Baseball. Rose played from 1963 to 1986, best known for his many years with the Cincinnati Reds.
      , Ozzie Smith, Ryne Sandberg, Steve Carlton, Andre Dawson, and two-time U.S. Olympic champion softball pitcher Lisa Fernandez.

      The game is being played in the Bay Area for the first time and takes place at Evans Field on the UC Berkeley campus, next to Bancroft Avenue and the UC Berkeley Recreational Sports Facility.

      The event is open to the public. Tickets are $5 each and are available in advance by calling 925-467-3755 or by visiting select Safeway store locations. Tickets also will be available at the gate on game day. Free parking will be available for those with advance tickets. Gates are open at 11 am and players will be available to sign autographs.

      Raffle prizes during the game include a chance to hit against Lisa Fernandez, and signed memorabilia.

      All proceeds go to CaPCURE to fight against prostate cancer prostate cancer, cancer originating in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in men in the United States and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in men. . The fight against prostate cancer is one of Safeway's top philanthropic priorities. In 2003 alone, Safeway donated more than $2.5 million to CaPCURE.
