"I know first hand about the devastating dev·as·tate tr.v. dev·as·tat·ed, dev·as·tat·ing, dev·as·tates 1. To lay waste; destroy. 2. "My mother was a long time smoker, and I always wanted her to quit, but she was unable to. That's why I decided to lend my support to C.H.A.M.P.S.S. - I want kids to know that there are things they can do to help their parents give up cigarettes, and help their families live a healthier life." Jackson and Danny McGoldrick, director, CTFK, announced the launch of www.champss.org. The Web site serves as a resource for kids to access tips on how to talk to their parents about quitting smoking, as well as educational materials and other information they will need to help support their parents through a quit attempt. The C.H.A.M.P.S.S. site also provides kids with a forum to exchange ideas and success stories, and features interactive tools such as e-cards, message board and a printable pledge card that families can sign together as a reminder of their commitment to become smoke-free. Joining Jackson and McGoldrick at today's press conference are two youth anti-tobacco advocates, Cynthia, a freshman at Boston College, and Jacob, a senior at Hillsborough High School Hillsborough High School can refer to:
"Kids can and do make a difference in adults' lives. In fact, research has shown that kids often influence a parent's decision to quit smoking," explained McGoldrick. "Studies also have shown that when parents quit smoking, their children become less likely to start smoking and more likely to quit if they already smoke." One study found that the odds of a child smoking were reduced by 39 percent when both parents quit. Experts conclude that the earlier parents quit, the less likely their children are to start smoking. For more information about the C.H.A.M.P.S.S. campaign, log on to www.champss.org.
