Hall-of-Famer Teams Up With Campaign for Tobacco-Free

The Marlins are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's National League. From to the present, the Marlins have played in Dolphin Stadium.  are not the only potential champs taking the World Series by storm this month. At a press conference today, baseball legend Reggie Jackson will team up with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK CTFK Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids ) to announce a new campaign called C.H.A.M.P.S.S., or Children Helping And Motivating Parents to Stop Smoking.

Known to baseball fans everywhere as "Mr. October" for his clutch performance in the post-season, Jackson, whose mother died of a stroke likely related to smoking, hopes this campaign will encourage and empower kids to help their families become smoke-free by providing them with the information and resources they need to help their parents quit smoking.

"I know first hand about the devastating dev·as·tate

impact that smoking can have on a family," said perennial All-Star Reggie Jackson. "My mother was a long time smoker, and I always wanted her to quit, but she was unable to. That's why I decided to lend my support to C.H.A.M.P.S.S. - I want kids to know that there are things they can do to help their parents give up cigarettes, and help their families live a healthier life."

Jackson and Danny McGoldrick, director, CTFK, announced the launch of www.champss.org. The Web site serves as a resource for kids to access tips on how to talk to their parents about quitting smoking, as well as educational materials and other information they will need to help support their parents through a quit attempt. The C.H.A.M.P.S.S. site also provides kids with a forum to exchange ideas and success stories, and features interactive tools such as e-cards, message board and a printable pledge card that families can sign together as a reminder of their commitment to become smoke-free.

Joining Jackson and McGoldrick at today's press conference are two youth anti-tobacco advocates, Cynthia, a freshman at Boston College, and Jacob, a senior at Hillsborough High School Hillsborough High School can refer to:
  • Hillsborough High School (Florida) in Hillsborough County, Florida
  • Hillsborough High School (New Jersey) in Hillsborough, New Jersey
in Florida, who will be honored for their ongoing efforts to help their communities become smoke-free. Jackson will recognize these teens for their commitment to the anti-tobacco cause and will award them with autographed "C.H.A.M.P.S.S." jerseys.

"Kids can and do make a difference in adults' lives. In fact, research has shown that kids often influence a parent's decision to quit smoking," explained McGoldrick. "Studies also have shown that when parents quit smoking, their children become less likely to start smoking and more likely to quit if they already smoke."

One study found that the odds of a child smoking were reduced by 39 percent when both parents quit. Experts conclude that the earlier parents quit, the less likely their children are to start smoking.
