the staying power of a business that has endured two world wars, a depression, several recessions and, of course, heated competition.

Such is the case with Bartell Drugs, observing its 111th anniversary this month. The longevity longevity (lŏnjĕv`ĭtē), term denoting the length or duration of the life of an animal or plant, often used to indicate an unusually long life.  of the company is underscored by its status as the oldest drugstore chain in the U.S. -- and the only one of any size that remains a family-owned affair.

"It's all about taking care of customers and their needs," said George D. Bartell, grandson of the founder and only the third family member to head the Seattle-based chain.

"We believe customer service never goes out of style," said Bartell. "It may sound old-fashioned, but our customers continue to respond to service, coupled with good product selection, competitive pricing and convenient locations."

The company hit the 50-store milestone with the opening of its first store in Tacoma earlier this year. In July, Bartell's will complete an extensive enlargement enlargement,

Much of the company's success is due to the efforts of our 1,600-plus employees, Bartell said.

"From our customer service to the appearance of our displays our employees make it happen," said Bartell. "And, we are proud of what they do."
