Barry W. Perry to succeed the retiring Orin R. Smith Orin R. Smith was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Engelhard Corporation from 1999 to 2001. He joined Engelhard as Vice President in 1977, became President in 1984. Prior to joining Engelhard, Smith served as President of M&T Chemicals. as chairman and chief executive officer effective Jan. 1, 2001. "Engelhard is fortunate to have an executive of Barry Perry's caliber and character," Mr. Smith said. "He is an extremely strong leader who has earned the respect of employees, customers and members of the investment community. He also has been instrumental in building on Engelhard's track record of consistent earnings growth." Mr. Perry, 54, joined Engelhard in 1993 as group vice president and general manager of the Pigments and Additives Group. He was named president and chief operating officer in January 1997 and elected a director of the corporation in May of that year. Before joining Engelhard, Mr. Perry was group vice president and general manager of the Latex & Specialty Polymers Division of Rhone-Poulenc, and, before that, held a number of executive positions during his 22 years with General Electric Co.
