Inverness CT 5 Liverpool XI 0 A NEAR-CAPACITY crowd of 7352 last night paid tribute to one of Inverness Caley Thistle's greatest servants. The five-star victory over a Liverpool XI was fittingly rousing for Barry Wilson's testimonial. Veteran midfielder Wilson celebrated 10 years at the Highland club with a deserved victory against an Anfield side made up largely of reserve team players. The rest of the Inverness team was made up from players in the first team, with Don Cowie, Michael Fraser and Proctor among those starting the game. Liverpool brought north a side that included Spanish Under-17 forward Danny Pacheco and former Ajax youth academy graduate Jordy Brouwer,20. Falkirk-born Ryan Flynn, 19, captained the Reds. The Anfield side created the first opening and Pacheco stabbed wide when put clean through by Flynn in 11 minutes. McAllister should have opened the scoring in 26 minutes but scooped over after being set up by Wood. Wilson was denied a goal when Liverpool full-back Stephen Darby blocked his sliding effort on the line after a McAllister cross. Caley Thistle broke the stalemate with a minute left in the first period when McBain's low 20-yard shot deflected off Ronald Huth and trundled past keeper Dean Bouzanis. Just before the half-time whistle Spanish central defender San Jose over-hit a back pass which Bouzanis could not reach before it went into the net. Wood netted Caley Thistle's third immediately after the break when he slid in to direct a McAllister centre past Bouzanis at the back post. McAllister struck the fourth in 59 minutes when he lofted a header over Liverpool's Australian keeper from Wilson's deflected centre. Proctor finished off the win when he nipped in to capitalise on a defensive error by substitute Michael Scott. CAPTION(S): TRIBUTE: Barry Wilson and Liverpool skipper Ryan Flynn |
