SA Barry Lyndon, the title character of Thackeray's famous novel, is the epitome of the gentleman rogue Rogue, river, c.200 mi (320 km) long, rising in SW Oreg., in the Cascade Range N of Crater Lake. It flows southwest and west through a fertile valley (noted for its orchard fruits) and then across the Coast Range to the Pacific Ocean at Gold Beach. and rascal. As a young man bore at the lowest levels of Irish gentry, Barry and his mother have the highest aspirations aspirations npl → aspiraciones fpl (= ambition); ambición f aspirations npl (= hopes, ambition) → aspirations fpl for him. He achieves love, fortune and a title by blundering blun·der n. A usually serious mistake typically caused by ignorance or confusion. v. blun·dered, blun·der·ing, blun·ders v.intr. 1. To move clumsily or blindly. 2. and plundering along, taking chances and getting by on his good looks, manners and ultimate self-confidence. Never are his misfortunes his fault and his good fortune is always well deserved. There is not much to like about his character, but Thackeray writes about him completely non-judgmentally. This novel is an interesting look at 18thcentury culture and values, at least among the fashionable, and Cormack's reading is as confident and self-righteous as the character he portrays.
