Barringer announces development contracts.NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 29, 1995--Barringer Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ SMALL CAP:BARR, BARRW) today announced that it had recently received a number of development awards, totaling approximately $200,000. Barringer Instruments Inc. was awarded a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to develop a passenger screening system that could be deployed at airports to enhance security. Kenneth Wood, President of Barringer Instruments, said that the program will "assess an innovative way to screen passengers for explosives devices before they are allowed onto an aircraft." The passenger screening system will be based upon Barringer's IONSCAN explosives detector which is presently deployed at the Channel Tunnel Channel Tunnel, popularly called the "Chunnel," a three-tunnel railroad connection running under the English Channel, connecting Folkestone, England, and Calais, France. The tunnels are 31 mi (50 km) long. There are two rail tunnels, each 25 ft (7.6 m) in diameter, and a central tunnel, 16 ft (4.8 m) in diameter, that is used for maintenance and ventilation. The depth of the tunnels below the seabed averages about 150 ft (45 m). providing rapid high sensitivity screening. Wood also noted that this grant comes at a time when security at major U.S. airports has been raised to higher alert levels. Barringer Europe, S.A.R.L. received from French Rail (SNCF SNCF - Sans Nous les Cafés Ferment (French) SNCF - Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer (French National Railways)), the first phase of a multi-part contract for the development of a mobile explosives detection system for use on European rail systems serving the Channel Tunnel. This contract was awarded after initial evaluations of a prototype system were successfully completed. The concept of active explosives detection efforts being made while the trainsets are in motion could be adopted by other European Rail Networks based upon successful development of these systems. The British Defence Research Agency has awarded Barringer Research Ltd. a contract to develop a special chemical stimulant for explosives detection equipment verification. This will permit operators of chemical explosives detection systems to easily determine that their equipment is operating at its optimum performance levels. Barringer Instruments also received a proof-of-principal contract from The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. The program will assess the use of high speed IMS technology for the detection of trace organics in contaminated soils. It is anticipated that a successful demonstration will lead to follow-on activities with NRL and other organizations involved with soils remediation. Barringer Technologies Inc. is a holding company with three operating groups. Barringer Instruments develops, manufactures and markets specialty analytical instruments for drugs and explosives detection, exploration and environmental monitoring applications. Barringer Consumer Products, LLC markets The BARRINGER DRUGALERT SYSTEM(TM), a home drug test and identification kit.
