Barracuda Networks Enhances Barracuda Spam Firewall with New Security Features and Filtering Functionality; Firmware 3.3 Includes Industry Standard Email Encryption Techniques and Increased Functionality for Higher Accuracy and Performance.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Barracuda Networks, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise-class spam firewall solutions, today announced the immediate deployment of firmware version 3.3 for the entire Barracuda barracuda, slender, elongated fish of tropical seas. Barracudas have long snouts and projecting lower jaws armed with large, sharp-edged teeth. They are ferocious, striking at anything that gleams, and are considered excellent game fishes.  Spam Firewall line. This firmware provides several advanced features including enhanced Bayesian analysis Bayesian analysis A decision-making analysis that '…permits the calculation of the probability that one treatment is superior based on the observed data and prior beliefs…subjectivity of beliefs is not a liability, but rather explicitly allows , real-time Intent Analysis, secure LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) A protocol used to access a directory listing. LDAP support is implemented in Web browsers and e-mail programs, which can query an LDAP-compliant directory. , and more.

Enhancements to Bayesian analysis include a new Bayesian algorithm for global and per-user databases for improved learning and accuracy. In addition, firmware 3.3 includes new plug-ins for Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes that increase Bayesian analysis accuracy by enabling users to designate spam from legitimate email, as well as automatically build whitelists based on previous emails sent by each user. These new plug-in features further decrease email-processing time and reduce false positives.

"Bayesian filtering is still one of the most accurate defenses against spam," said Dean Drako, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Barracuda Networks. "The new plug-ins allow users to directly train the Bayesian filter, making the Barracuda Spam Firewall even more accurate based on the users' individual email preferences."

Updates to Barracuda Networks Intent Analysis enable real-time dynamic checks of embedded URLs and DNS servers for identification of blocked IP addresses contained in the message envelope or the message text. In addition to blocking spam from suspected spammer IP addresses, these enhancements will improve the overall security for customers as emails containing potential viruses embedded within harmful URLs are eliminated before reaching the users' networks.

"Viruses and other threats can infect the network quickly if they are not stopped at the network edge," said Drako. "With Intent Analysis our customers have an advantage over these threats because the Barracuda Spam Firewall is able to block them real time. Consequently we have consistently been a first responder when some of the most malicious virus attacks have hit, saving our customers from potentially devastating dev·as·tate

 damage to their networks."

In addition, secure and enhanced LDAP for recipient verification and password protection during single-sign-on transactions has been added with firmware 3.3 along with several other advanced features including:

--Email delivery status display

--Configurable quarantine retention policies

--Multi-byte subject searching for international character sets

--Additional log filtering and analysis options

--Proxy support

Barracuda Networks also recently announced STARTTLS support and integration of key outbound filtering techniques -- including rate controls, domain restrictions, user authentication (SASL 1. (language) SASL - St Andrews Static Language.

), attachment blocking -- for simultaneous inbound and outbound filtering across the full Barracuda Spam Firewall line. Both enhancements are included in firmware 3.3.

Barracuda Spam Firewall firmware 3.3 will deploy this week to new and current customers at no additional charge. For more information on firmware 3.3 deployment please email support@barracudanetworks.com.

About the Barracuda Spam Firewall

The Barracuda Spam Firewall is available in five models and supports from 1,000 to 30,000 active users with no per user licensing fees. The Barracuda Spam Firewall can be installed in front of the email server in typically less than five minutes and is automatically updated hourly to block new forms of spam and viruses. Its architecture leverages open source spam and virus solutions in conjunction with ten defense layers: denial of service A condition in which a system can no longer respond to normal requests. See denial of service attack.  and security protection, IP block list, rate control, virus check with archive decompression, proprietary virus check, user specified rules, spam fingerprint check, Intent Analysis, spam rule-based scoring, and Bayesian analysis. In addition, the entire Barracuda Spam Firewall line features simultaneous inbound and outbound email filtering with the inclusion of sophisticated outbound email filtering techniques such as rate controls, domain restrictions, user authentication (SASL), keyword and attachment blocking, dual layer virus blocking and remote user support for outbound email filtering. The Barracuda Spam Firewall's layered approach minimizes the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day. Unlike software solutions, the Barracuda Spam Firewall reduces the load placed on the email server by off-loading both spam and virus filtering. Barracuda Networks also offers the Energize Update subscription service to automatically update the Barracuda Spam Firewall with the latest spam rules and virus definitions.
