Barr goes for a belt.


COMEBACK king Gary Barr is to fight for the vacant Northern Area belt at 81kgs when Birtley stage one of their top-class dinner shows at the Lancastrian Suite in Dunston on Friday night.

Barr, a seasoned England international, is to take on ABA finalist and Tri-Nations champion Lawrence Osueke from the Northumbria club in Newcastle.

Barr qualified for the fight by beating Plains Farm's Liam Knight in an eliminator on his return to the ring after a year out.

Birtley are hosting Irish club Wexford on Friday when juniors Tommy Ward Thomas Alfred Ward (born August 2, 1887, Rawalpindi, India, died February 16, 1936, Transvaal) was a South African cricketer who played in 23 Tests from 1912 to 1924.  and Luke McCormack, who have represented England in the European Schoolboy Championships, will feature.

Senior David Hardcastle, also on the bill, took a points decision off Aaron Elgar (Perth Green) on a club show.

Sonny Francis and Callum French both won on points in support bouts on the Area Novices Championships at Peterlee.

Thomas Burnside lost on a first-round disqualification which appeared very harsh in the competition itself.
