Barr, Nevada. Winter study; an Anna Pigeon mystery.BARR, Nevada. Winter study; an Anna Pigeon mystery. Read by Barbara Rosenblat. 11 cds. 12.5 hrs. Recorded Books. 2008. 978-1-4281-9811-1. $123.75. Vinyl; plot, reader notes. SA Park Ranger Anna Pigeon joins the three other members of the winter study team and two scientists from Homeland Security on Isle Royale in Lake Superior to observe the behavior of the wolves there. Anna doesn't realize that while the team from Michigan Tech believes in the importance of continuing their annual winter studies when the park is closed, Homeland Security wants to open the park to the public in winter to provide better security for this section of the northern border. So many people living in such a small cabin in the dead of winter are bound to produce tensions, especially when one of those people is Homeland Security representative Bob Menechinn. After his graduate assistant Katherine Huff turns up as the victim of an apparent wolf attack, Anna and the researchers grow increasingly suspicious of each other and Bob. As the pace of the story gathers speed, another young woman disappears. Soon, as she tries to keep ahead of the mounting clues, Anna is in a most dangerous situation. Suspense grips the reader as the story plays out against the frozen, snowy wilds of this winter wonderland. Rosenblat perfectly portrays Anna Pigeon, as well as the other two women and five men in the story. She captures not only Anna's knowledge and awareness of the natural world, but also her wiliness, "grit," and resourcefulness as she fights for her life. A rousing, tense mystery for mature teens and adults, especially those who revel in outdoor adventure stories.
