BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 1996--Barnett Banks Inc., headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla., recently processed over 8.5 million checks within a single day, an amount considered to be the largest volume of items ever processed on an electronic imaging platform.

Barnett sorts its checks using image technology from Unisys Corp., by which computers read the dollar amount written on a check and automatically enter it to a bank account.

With $42 billion in assets, Barnett is the leading financial institution in Florida and ranks among the top 25 in the U.S. Unisys is a major provider of image-based check sorting solutions, both nationally and internationally.

"This all-time processing high -- totaling 8,567,000 checks -- represented nearly twice our average run of about 4.5 million checks," said Allen Brown, Barnett's Director of Item Processing Services. "We believe it's the largest check-processing volume ever achieved in one day, anywhere in the world, via electronic image technology."

The Barnett record, which occurred on the day after a bank holiday, was based on total checks run at the institution's three main item processing centers in Jacksonville and Tampa -- where the Unisys imaging system is fully implemented -- as well as at the Miami center, where installation is nearly complete.

Processed on the record-setting day were over 2.8 million checks (1.5 million unencoded) at the Jacksonville site, over 3.5 million (1.3 million unencoded) in Tampa, and nearly 2.2 million in Miami.

Barnett acquired the ability to sort very large volumes of checks in 1994, when it invested $20 million in Unisys item image-processing technology. Processing advantages were quickly realized during 1995 when, in its Jacksonville center alone, Barnett was able to run approximately 200 million unencoded checks on an image platform.
