He is one of the leading players of his generation, having won three major championships and a total of 32  struggled in Sunday's third round of the US Open as unheralded Ricky Barnes Ricky Barnes (born February 6, 1981) is an American golfer from Stockton, California. US pace-setter Barnes, the 2002 US Amateur champion seeking his first pro title, sank a 20-foot eagle putt at the par-5 fourth hole after a birdie at the second and getting up and down from a bunker on the par-3 third.

That put Barnes on 11-under par after five holes, making him only the fourth player in US Open history to go so low at any point in the event's history dating to 1895.

Barnes stood three strokes ahead of countryman and fellow qualifier Lucas Glover Lucas Hendley Glover (born November 12, 1979) is an American professional golfer.

Glover was born in Greenville, South Carolina. He attended Clemson University from 1998 until 2001. During his Clemson career he was named an 1st Team All-America in 2000 and 2001.

Even after a stunning chip-in at the 17th hole, Woods stood on three-over, 14 strokes off the pace, and Mickelson tumbled 11 strokes back.

Barnes matched Jim Furyk's 11-under from the 2003 US Open at Olympia Fields and moved one shot shy of matching the most under-par in US Open history by Woods at Pebble Beach in 2000 and Gil Morgan Gilmer Bryan Morgan II, OD (born September 25 1946) is an American professional golfer.

Torrential downpours have already made Bethpage Black unplayable twice and assured the latest weather-delayed finish in US Open history. Completion of the final round and a possible playoff have been pushed back to Monday.

Rain-softened greens and cool, overcast conditions made for solid scoring opportunities in the third round.

Tenth-tee starter Woods, seeking a 15th major title to move within three of the record 18 won by Jack Nicklaus, missed an eight-foot birdie putt at the 13th and botched botch

Woods showed his skill with a chip-in to cheers at 17 but could not take advantage of prime conditions.

Mickelson, playing his last event before taking a break to help wife Amy through breast cancer surgery, birdied the par-3 third but dropped back with a bogey at the fifth and a double-bogey at six.

Mickelson followed with back-to-back birdies but settled for bogey at the ninth.

World number one Woods began the day needing to match the record 11-stroke winning rally over the final 36 holes to win a record-tying fourth US Open and become the first player to successfully defend all four major titles.

Left-hander Mickelson, a four-time US Open runner-up who has never won the event, is unlikely to play in next month's British Open so he can be with his wife.

American Hunter Mahan charged into contention, reaching the turn three-under for the round and the tournament, while England's Lee Westwood, trying to become the first European winner of the US Open since England's Tony Jacklin in 1970, was even for the day and two-under overall after seven.
