Barnes Jewish Christian Picks MedicaLogic's Logician.

PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 1996--MedicaLogic's Logician(TM) medical record software has been chosen as an ambulatory care electronic medical record by BJC Health System(SM), the nation's second largest non-profit healthcare system, based in St. Louis.

Under terms of the agreement, BJC will use the software to integrate patient medical records in more than 100 ambulatory care locations throughout Missouri and southern Illinois.

Both sides say the BJC/MedicaLogic agreement is the result of implementing a "best of breed" strategy, in which an organization selects the best product of its kind for a specific portion of a project. This type of decision-making moves away from the concept of a single-source vendor and allows organizations the flexibility of partnering with vendors that meet specific needs.

"This important selection by BJC underscores the momentum that best-of-breed vendors are seeing in the market," said David Moffenbeier, chief operating officer of MedicaLogic. "The alternative strategy of using a single source vendor for everything is becoming less appealing to customers in these highly competitive markets."

According to David Weiss, vice president of information services at BJC, MedicaLogic was selected after a collaborative, nine-month pilot program at two sites. "MedicaLogic worked in true partnership with us to determine our needs," said Weiss. "It's crucial that we select the very best product for each information systems project we have. MedicaLogic's Logician software allows us to integrate patient information in our ambulatory care sites and streamline our paperwork."

MedicaLogic's agreement with Barnes Jewish Christian follows recent contracts with other leading health systems and organizations. Last month, First Physician Care, a major practice management company, purchased Logician for its physician network in the Southeastern U.S. Others include The North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Allina Health System, North Memorial Health Care, Cox Health Systems and Providence Health System.

BJC Health System was established in June 1993 and provides integrated healthcare delivery services throughout Missouri and southern Illinois. In addition to hundreds of medical clinics and ambulatory services locations, BJC comprises 13 hospitals and six long-term care facilities. BJC is affiliated with the renowned Washington University School of Medicine and has more than 23,000 employees, making it the second largest employer in the St. Louis region.

MedicaLogic has been providing medical record software and knowledge base modules to the ambulatory healthcare market since 1985.
