          Stores Nationwide To Hold Special Daily Storytimes

   A Recommended List of Books for Parents To Read to Their Children

           Psychologists and Counselors Will Be Available in
           New York Metro Area Stores To Talk with Families

    Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE:BKS), the nation's largest bookseller,
today announced special nationwide and New York Metro programs to help
families understand and deal with the traumatic events the nation is
witnessing. The programs are:

    -   In addition to its regular Storytimes, Barnes & Noble stores
        nationwide will hold special, daily Storytimes for children
        beginning Saturday, September 15th, through Sunday, September
        30th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. These Storytimes will focus
        on how children can deal with the events of September 11th.

    -   Barnes & Noble's Web site, www.bn.com, has posted a
        recommended reading list of titles that parents can read to
        help them and their children cope with this tragedy.

    -   Psychologists and counselors from the New York Psychoanalytic
        Institute and Society will be in Barnes & Noble stores in the
        New York Metro area from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday,
        September 14th, and Monday, September 17th. They will talk to
        families to help them alleviate their fears and concerns. Free
        hot chocolate and reading materials will be available.
