Hinduism and Other Eastern Religions crams in a lot of information, since it covers Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism Jainism (jī`nĭzəm) [i.e., the religion of Jina], religious system of India practiced by about 5,000,000 persons. Jainism, Ajivika, and Buddhism arose in the 6th cent. B.C. as protests against the overdeveloped ritualism of Hinduism, particularly its sacrificial cults, and the authority of the Veda., and Sikhism Sikhism (sĭk`ĭzəm), religion centered in the Indian state of Punjab, numbering worldwide some 19 million. Some 300,000 Sikhs live in Britain, and there are smaller communities in North America, Australia, and Singapore. By the late 1990s Sikhism was the world's fifth largest faith and had some 175,000 U.S.. The vocabulary is the equivalent of text written for adults, but many words specific to each faith are explained in context and glossaries appear at the end of each book. The book on Christianity has brief chapters titled The Development of Christianity, The Life of Jesus, The Ministry of Jesus, The Crucifixion crucifixion, hanging on a cross, in ancient times a method of capital punishment. It was practiced widely in the Middle East but not by the Greeks. The Romans, who may have borrowed it from Carthage, reserved it for slaves and despised malefactors. They used it frequently, as in the civil wars and in putting down the Jewish opposition., The Trinity, Christian Worship, The Sacraments, Christmas, Celebrating Easter, The Religious Life, Cathedrals and Churches, Missionaries, Divisions in Christianity, The Church in the Twenty-first Century. In our multicultural society, these essential guides to the major faiths will be most helpful. Even high school students will find them useful introductions. Claire Rosser, KLIATT |
