and Nathan Risley spent some of Friday's practice working on the corner kick and header they used to beat Sheldon for the Midwestern League boys soccer championship.

The two teamed up again Saturday night when Risley headed in a corner kick from Barnes with 63 seconds left to give No. 2 South Eugene a nail-biting 1-0 victory over McNary in the second round of the OSAA OSAA Oregon School Activities Association

"It's the Michael-Nate connection," Risley said with a laugh. "I was thinking about that Sheldon game. It was the same play. It's amazing."

"It's heartbreaking because you play 79 minutes of good defense and then one mistake cost us," McNary coach Miguel Camarena said. "Our guys played as tough as they could. Just one mistake."

For a while, it appeared certain that 80 minutes of soccer weren't going to be enough to decide a winner, as both teams' defenses stood strong.

But when South Eugene was awarded a corner kick in the 79th minute, it gave Barnes and Risley the perfect chance to reenact their 70th-minute game-winner against the Irish on Oct. 20.

Barnes took his time to set up before booting a line drive that the leaping Risley headed into the center of net to avoid the looming overtime session.

"Michael always comes through in the clutch," Risley said. "I was pretty confident in our team. I knew if we didn't get it done in regulation, we'd get it done in overtime."

on McNary goalkeeper Rodolofo Torres' night. The junior kept his team in the game with 10 saves, many coming on diving stops.

"He was unbelievable," Camarena said.

In the end, though, the Axemen's offense finally broke the Celtics' defense to keep their season alive.

"It gets a little nerve-racking, but this is the way playoff games are," South Eugene coach Colin McMillen said. "The most important thing is that this team continued to play. They never lost focus in the game, and if you keep playing consistently, it'll come."
