Fire crews from West Linton and Penicuik battled through Tuesday night to bring the blaze under control.

Father-of-five Derek, 54, said: "I can't understand why anybody would want to do this.

"The barn is set back from the road, so someone would just not have been passing.

"Also, there were footprints in the snow, leading from the road to the barn and back.

"Luckily, most of my flock were in the fields. The ones in the barn were young or ill."

A police spokesman said: "We are treating this as suspicious and are appealing for any witnesses or those with information about the incident to contact a police station."
