Baring Asset Management Increases Exposure to Emerging Asia.

BOSTON -- Baring Asset Management (BAM Bam (bäm), town (1996 pop. 70,100), Kerman prov., SE Iran, on the intermittent Bam River. Located on the western edge of the Dasht-e Lut, Bam is a trade center in a henna-growing region. Dates and other fruits are also grown; camels are raised. ), the global institutional investment management firm, has increased its exposure to emerging Asian economies, including Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The increased Asian weightings come at the expense of reductions in exposure to more defensive UK-based assets.

"In 2006, we feel that significant demand from their own domestic consumers will begin to become a factor in Asian markets," commented C. Hayes Miller, CFA (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986) Signed into law in 1986, the CFA was a significant step forward in criminalizing unauthorized access to computer systems and networks. The Act applies to "federal interest computers" that include any system used by the U.S. , a global equity portfolio manager and a member of the Strategic Policy Group.  somewhat, we feel that the increase in intra-Asian demand will be enough to propel Asian firms to strong performance next year. Furthermore, we see a strong environment for corporate spending on productivity enhancing technologies and equipment, which suits the technology sector in Asia."

Although Baring is maintaining its current overweight position in developed Asia ex- Japan (Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov. , Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. ), it feels that the market conditions of emerging countries (including South Korea, which accounts for 18% of the overall emerging index) are positioned to offer greater returns.

For sector allocations, Baring continues to overweight materials and in particular energy, despite its two-year run up in price. Says Miller, "At present the global energy sector is showing a 24% return on equity, which is an historic high and gives us confidence that the sector has farther to go. Recent weakness is healthy consolidation."
