Edwards' SCOREx (supply chain optimization Supply Chain Optimization is the application of processes and tools to ensure the optimal operation of a manufacturing and distribution supply chain. This includes the optimal placement of inventory within the supply chain, minimizing operating costs (including manufacturing costs, and real-time execution) initiative. Based in Parma, Italy, Barilla's corporate strategy is to deploy OneWorld and J.D. Edwards SCOREx to all of its worldwide subsidiaries. Included in Barilla's corporate strategy is the implementation of OneWorld at its U.S. subsidiary, Barilla America Inc. OneWorld will support Barilla's new manufacturing facility in Ames, Iowa Ames is a city located in the central part of the U.S. state of Iowa, about 30 miles north of Des Moines in Story County. It is the principal city of the 'Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area' which encompasses all of Story County, Iowa and which, when combined with the -- the company's first U.S. manufacturing facility. Ernst & Young will assist Barilla in its implementation of OneWorld in the U.S. The first phase of the two-phase project, implementing OneWorld in Barilla's U.S. facility, will be completed in September. Included in the installation are accounts payable, cost accounting, procurement, general accounting and manufacturing functionality. Phase two will take advantage of the functionality available through J.D. Edwards' SCOREx initiative, including accounts payable and distribution, and is expected to be completed by July 1999. Barilla U.S. headquarters will also serve as the flagship installation for J.D. Edwards manufacturing solution. The entire implementation project is being managed by Barilla's Italian headquarters. Barilla has already implemented J.D. Edwards in its French subsidiary. "The long-range goal of this project is to maintain financial data in a clean and efficient manner. With OneWorld, it will be easy for corporate to aggregate the different subsidiaries' financial data. Furthermore, this data will be consistent with that of our counterparts throughout the world. We will have a consistency that is currently lacking," said a Barilla Alimentare spokesperson. Barilla chose J.D. Edwards' OneWorld because of its flexibility. Barilla's business processes dictate its technology needs and solutions. "Our business goals require good, flexible, and robust business applications that can be easily customized to incorporate our own nomenclature and terminology that is unique to the pasta manufacturing business. The J.D. Edwards solution allowed us to implement only the functionality we needed and easily customize it to meet our unique business needs," said the Barilla spokesperson. Another reason that Barilla selected OneWorld was the company's aggressive timeline. OneWorld's design allows for an implementation that is front-loaded, intensive, and accelerated. Barilla needed an open system that can easily communicate with the Digital platform in the Italian headquarters office. J.D. Edwards' OneWorld will run on a Digital-Alpha Server using Microsoft's Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs.
